IVAR SIGURBERGSON interview for Museboat Live Channel
on Sunday, September 20th 2020 in TJ´s Muse Bridge show

He was born in Iceland on a small volcanic island in the year when the Beatles released their first album. When he was ten years old, he and his family moved to escape the volcanic eruption. At the same age, he learned his first guitar chords. That was the beginning of his musical career.

At the same age, he learned his first guitar chords. That was the beginning of his musical career. Ivar and his friends founded their first band when he was about thirteen years old. They named the band “Make It” and often played at school dances. He and his friends would rehearse in the basement of his parents' house. Many musicians rehearsed with them there. The best known of them was the Icelandic musician, Bjork.

Ivar Sigurbergson

As a teenager, Ivar studied both the classical guitar and the electric guitar. He later took some private classical piano lessons. For a while afterwards, he taught students to play the keyboard and guitar. Ivar went on to graduate from university with a B.Ed. degree. A schoolteacher, he has taught music education at public primary schools for several years.

Music is Ivar’s life and passion. He is a songwriter, a singer, and a guitar and keyboard player. The musical genre he plays could probably be classified as indie pop music. In addition, he enjoys listening to all kinds of music. Some of the musicians he appreciates include Bach, Paco de Lucia, Santana, U2, Bryan Ferry, Coldplay, and Adele. More than anything else, he enjoys producing music and playing for those who enjoy his music.

His music very soon appealed to Museboat listeners, so it was no wonder that in 2019 he entered the Museboat´s Hall of Fame with the song „All about love“. His compositions bring listeners an atmosphere of well-being and relaxation on a pop-oriented background without exaggerated dramatic twists, but with a unique musical and vocal expression, so you will immediately find out that Ivar Sigurbergson is coming on the air. And Ivar is also coming to the Museboat Live channel studio, because we have prepared a few questions for him.

Hi Ivar!!

Hi and thank you for interviewing me.

Thank you for joining us here. We know your music well and play it a lot in our broadcasting but I would like to know something more about music in your country. What music is the most popular in Iceland? And do you also play that music style?

The Icelandic music scene is much bigger than the population of Iceland. Icelandic popular music today includes many bands and artists. You can find all kinds of music like heavy metal, indie rock, afro beat, hip-hop, rap, jazz, classic music and lots of others. There have been a lot of concerts in Iceland except now because of covid. There are many good musicians here and some have attracted worldwide attention like Björk and bands like Sigurrós and Of monsters and men. Every year there is a music festival in Iceland called Iceland airwaves. At the concerts Icelandic and foreign musicians perform their music and people come from all over the world to listen. Yes, Icelandic music is very diverse and interesting. So there is no dominant type of music in Iceland but the music that I play can be called indie pop.

We know you are a music school teacher. Tell us please, how do you see the future of music when it comes to your students? What are your students really like? Where do you think they see their future or what musical direction are they heading?

I am an educated teacher and teach as a music teacher in a public school. My students are kids and hopefully I will influence some of them. Some of my students have become professional musicians. But the purpose is to teach students to enjoy music and learn about music. We sing a lot and then they learn to play simple songs on instruments. Music is part of the general education of children in public schools in Iceland. Some children are very interested and you never know who will become a musician. Being a music teacher is a very rewarding job.

It certainly is. Tell us more about your music composing process? Where do you find inspiration for your songs?

I've been composing music since I was 12 years old, which is my passion and I just love it. It's very different how my songs become a reality. Sometimes the songs come to me when I'm playing on my keyboard or my guitar. Sometimes my songs are based on lyrics or ideas of lyrics like my latest song Lost in the city. The inspiration for the song Lost in the city came when I was travelling in Dubai. Sometimes the songs are created from a drum beat or some great keyboard sound. When the form of the song is ready I start recording it. Today I do all by myself. I play the instruments and sing all the voices. Before that I worked on my songs with the help of other musicians. Sometimes I get help with writing lyrics.

What do you consider to be your greatest success in your music career?

I think my greatest success in my music career is right now. My music has been played in many indie radio stations all over the world. I think I haven't had so many listeners before, which is fantastic.

What are your plans for the future?

My plans for the future is to continue on the same path of creating and playing music and try to reach as many people as possible with my music. It can be difficult to be an independent musician and shape your career by yourself but I would like to say that I'm just starting my career.

Can you tell something to your fans and friends?

More than anything else, I enjoy producing music and playing for those who enjoy my music. I will thank everyone who loves to listen to my music because my music means a lot to me.

Thank you for the interview Ivar. We really love your music.

Thanks so much for voting my songs and listening to my music on this great radio station.
