C E L A V I (Keh-La-Vi) interview for Museboat Live Channel
on Sunday, August 16th 2020 in TJ´s Muse Bridge show

Dark. Heavy. Strange. Beautiful. This is how we can describe fantastic music from industrial rock electro band C E L A V I from Bangor, North Wales. The heavy guitar driven sound of their music is dramatically contrasted by Sarah´s soft and delicate voice which compliments their music and makes them stand out from the crowd.

– The only word you can release after a few seconds of listening to their songs is: WOOOOOW!

Museboat Live Channel

The group consists of a pair of really talented musicians Sarah and Gwion who dedicate their free time not only to music but also to other meritorious goals and therefore we are glad that we could ask them a few questions.

Hello Sarah and Gwion!

Hello TJ and Museboat!

How did you decide to form this band? And why this particular music style?

Sarah Gwion and I come from different musical backgrounds but we also share mutual influences. My background is more pop as I used to be in a girl band when I was in schoolbut I listened to a lot of Slipknot and Marilyn Manson too. Gwion’s personal influences are more metal and industrial and deathcore. I think the combination of our influences hasbeen a major part of C E L A V I ‘s sound.

We know that you guys are also working as a radio host for Radio Ysbty Gwynedd which is a radio station where presenters are broadcasting shows every night to help families and friends get their message of love and support to those receiving health care. How did you actually get there?

Sarah I used to perform at events for Radio Ysbyty Gwynedd and was interviewed a few times on the station and one of the presenters asked me if I’d like to help and present on the hospital radio station myself. My Grandad was in hospital at the time and he was listening to the radio station to keep him company. I wanted to help the station and present. The presenters came to see him every day to ask if he’d like a request, to check if he was ok and to make him smile. I had been presenting for a few years and then after Gwion and I met, Gwion started to work at the station too. The station is very special and important to the both of us.

You guys are from Wales. How did that influence your music? Did it at all?

Gwion Honestly, I don’t think being Welsh has had any influence on us musically. The majority of the scene here in Wales is made up of indie and folk bands which is great, but it’s not what we’re into, definitely not what I’m into. There are some Welsh bands that have been an influence on me growing up; Funeral For a Friend and Bullet For My Valentine are some of the bigger names. I don’t think Welsh music has made an impact on me personally.

Sarah began her music career as a singer under the stage name Sarah Wynn but how about you Gwion? How did your music career begin?

Gwion My musical career kind of started out the much same as a lot of people will have; being an idealistic teenager with dreams; just playing and learning to play instrumentsand just jamming to other people’s songs with my friends. As time got on, was moved in from different bands, moving different instruments; playing drums, playing guitars and back and forth, ranging from different genres from like grungy stuff, old skoolpunk rock and even some hardcore stuff here and there. Always learning, learning from the mistakes as I’m going along and eventually until I got to here, until I got to C E L A V I.

You know that we really love your music on Museboat so we want to know what is behind all of that. Can you explain your music production process?

Gwion We start all of our songwriting at home in our music room that we built. I’ll start working on some ideas and share with Sarah. I record all the instruments at home except for the drums and create demos to take to the Studio. Sarah helps with the melodies and writes all the lyrics. We go to a Studio in England to record. Our producer is the best. Our producer has very similar music taste to us which really helps with our sound. I’ll record the drums, bass and guitar all live in the Studio then Sarah records the vocals and harmonies. We love going to the Studio, it’s awesome hearing our sound develop with our producer. He knows how to get the best out of us and for C E L A V I.

What is the funniest story behind your work?

Gwion We went to a gig in England before Christmas after playing a gig ourselves. We stayed after the gig to meet the band and have a chat then went to the car park to drive back home to Wales. The door to the car park was closed and we were confused as to why it wouldn’t open. The car park closed at 12am until 5am! We had work to do in the morning so we couldn’t find a hotel. We went to a McDonalds and drank tea and coffee until 5am then drove home and arrived in Wales at 8am! We made friends with the security guard there, he was laughing and said the amount of people he’d seen this happen to! We had so much to do that day, I think we survived on coffee! We didn’t sleep for a day!

What is the coolest venue you have played?

Percy’s Bar in Whitchurch is so cool! The owners are amazing people who really support local artists. It’s like a big family in the venue. Really quirky place, so many decorative stuff around and the best vibe. Can’t wait to go back and perform again!

What is the coolest venue you have played?

Sarah I personally write about experiences and feelings, whether it’s something personal to me or something that’s happened to someone around me or something I’ve seen.Could be something I’ve seen on TV or I’ve read about. I find writing a way of expressing myself and helping me express feelings and helping me cope with experiences. Yeah, I think that’s the best way to describe my work.

Gwion That’s an awesome way to describe your work. What inspires me, it’sreally difficult to say, I tend to sit down and just play and record whatever comes out. As they say if you throw enough things at a wall eventually something will stick. So keep writing, I keep trying different things and when I find something I like I go ‘ooh!’ and I’ll record it and I’ll work on that idea. I’ll work on it, then I’ll go off on a tangent on something else then I’ll work on something else then I’ll ask Sarah really nicely to pick one of the three she likes the most then I’ll grind that one and really workhard on it as much as I can.

What are your plans for the future?

We’re nearly ready to release our new song and then our new EP. We’re busy recording in the Studio at the moment and can’t wait for Museboat to hear our new music! Our gigs are currently being rescheduled for 2021; we are very excited to announce our first festival gig, Rock the Castle 2021 in a Castle in Wales, we can’t wait!

Do you have anything that you want to tell Museboat listeners?

Sarah Thank you to all Musboat listeners for all your love and support. It’s an absolute honour to be in Museboat’s Hall of Fame. The support we’ve had towards are debut single ‘Pan!c’ has been absolutely wonderful. We can’t thank you enough. Lots of love.

Can you tell us something in Welsh language? Something you want to tell your fans and friends? Please in English first and then in Welsh.

Thanks so much to Museboat from the bottom of our hearts and thank you to all the listeners and friends for all your love and support towards C E L A V I. We can’t thank you enough. It really means everything to us.
